It was the mid 1930's. Our founder, Gerald M. Pollack was a sales clerk with the Rogers Jewelry chain of Boston. His career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served his country in the Air Force. After the war, the country was on the move again and so was Mr. Pollack. He returned to the jewelry industry and was soon recognized for his hard work, honesty and devoted service. Gerald was a pioneer, and when the opportunity arose, he and his wife, Perle, purchased their own jewelry store in Portland, Maine.
When friends tell us about Mr. Pollack's first store on Congress Street, the first thing they remember is a sense of genuine warmth and friendship. He didn't want his store to have that stuffy, intimidating atmosphere which so many jewelry stores had. Mr. and Mrs. Pollack believed fine quality jewelry and honest, friendly service would keep their
customers coming back for life...and they did! We still service the grandchildren of those customers today!
As a child, Gerald Pollack's son, Stan, swept up or did small chores in that store. His father would sometimes introduce him to old customers, teaching Stan the value of honesty and confidence. Finally, he taught him about diamonds. Stan grew up...and mastered just about every course there was in diamonds and gems. He became the founding first President of the Maine Jewelers Association, The National President of the prestigious Diamond Council of America and the first Chancellor of Diamond Council University. Stan was also past President of Jewelers of America, a member of the Retail Jewelers Hall of Fame, and was recently chosen as honoree of the Jewelers Charity Fund for Children.
It is from this tradition that you will find a diamond expert at every G.M. Pollack & Sons store...a certified Diamontologist... whose gemological knowledge and devotion to customer service is outstanding. And that's just one member of an entire G.M. Pollack "family" of individuals dedicated to servicing you, the customer.
We've now grown to thirteen stores throughout Maine and New Hampshire, but we still do business the old-fashioned way...by earning our customers' loyalty for life through impeccable ethics, quality jewelry at honest prices, the best Peace of Mind Benefit Package in the business, and the warm, friendly service which has been the Pollack Family's tradition for almost half a century..
